Tofutsu-ko Waterfowl and Wetland Center
Designated as Abashiri Quasi-National Park, it is an observation spot for wild birds and plants.
The Lake Tofutsu Waterfowl and Wetlands Center is a great spot for nature observation. Lake Tofutsu was registered under the Ramsar Convention in 2005 and is a wildlife treasure trove that is also designated as Abashiri Quasi-National Park. The lake is known as one of Japan's leading stopover points for migratory birds, and approximately 260 species of wild birds have been spotted there to date.
In particular, you can see the beautiful sight of whooper swans, and in winter (mainly from November to May) you may also encounter rare species such as Steller's sea eagles with their distinctive orange beaks, white-tailed eagles, and red-crowned cranes. In summer, the lakeshore and grasslands are covered in blooming flowers such as irises and Siberian lilies, and the sight of grazing horses adds color to the idyllic scenery.
The center has an exhibition room where you can learn about the ecology and formation of Lake Tofutsu, as well as an observation corner equipped with telescopes and binoculars. You can also deepen your understanding of Lake Tofutsu and wild birds by watching a 13-minute video.
