Culture
Hokkaido Museum of Northern Indigenous Peoples
The only museum in Japan that specializes in introducing the culture of northern peoples
It is the only museum in Japan that introduces the culture of northern peoples, including the Ainu culture, and the culture of Okhotsk, from Greenland in the east to Northern Europe in the west. In the permanent exhibition room, more than 900 valuable materials are displayed according to themes such as clothing, food, and housing. The exhibits include highly functional clothes that take advantage of the characteristics of the material, such as a waterproof parka made from seal intestines, and a full-scale model of the pit dwellings used by the Eskimos in northern Alaska during the winter. You can learn the wisdom and techniques of the northern peoples who have endured and lived.
There is also an audio guide in Japanese and English that can be used on your smartphone.
