Hokkaido Museum of Northern Indigenous Peoples
The only museum in Japan that specializes in introducing the culture of northern peoples
Located on Tentozan, Hokkaido Museum of Northern Indigenous Peoples is the only museum in Japan that specializes in showcasing the culture of northern peoples. It showcases not only the Okhotsk culture that flourished along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, but also the cultures of the various northern peoples, such as the Ainu, Inuit, and Uilta, from Greenland in the east to Northern Europe in the west.
Inside the museum, you can learn about the wisdom and techniques of northern peoples, which they developed to survive the harsh cold. Over 900 valuable artifacts are on display, including displays of functional clothing that make the most of the characteristics of materials, such as waterproof parkas made from seal intestines, and a full-scale model of the pit dwellings used by the Eskimos of northern Alaska in winter. There are also a variety of exhibits that convey the rituals and spiritual culture of various ethnic groups, such as totem poles, wooden masks, and bear sending ceremonies.
The entrance hall is designed to resemble the conical tents commonly seen in northern regions, creating a unique atmosphere that is also appealing. The free audio guide is available in five languages: Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, and Thai, making it easy for foreign tourists to use.
