Abashiri Fisheries Science Center is a research facility established to promote coastal and inland fisheries in Abashiri City, but it also has an observation facility called the River and Lake Learning Center where you can learn about aquatic life and the fishing industry, with explanatory panels providing detailed information about the fish that live in Abashiri's rivers and lakes, the formation of the lakes, and the state of the local fishing industry.You can also interact with the fish in the breeding tanks and touch pools, so it's fun for both adults and children.
It also functions as an open testing and research facility and is widely used by research institutes and fisheries cooperatives both within and outside the city. It is also home to the Shimane University Estuary Research Center and the Abashiri Station of the Pan-Okhotsk Observation and Research Center of the Hokkaido University Institute of Low Temperature Chemistry, and is used in a variety of ways, including as a research base.
