Abashiri City Museum of Art
A museum rooted in the local climate
Abashiri City Museum of Art is the second art museum to open in Hokkaido, and the first to be newly built in the prefecture. As a municipal facility rooted in the local culture, this museum is notable for collecting and exhibiting works by artists who have chosen the Okhotsk Sea as their subject, including Abashiri-born painters Ikushi Keiichi and Takahashi Michio, and visitors can view works depicting the majestic, unspoiled landscape of Okhotsk.
The permanent exhibition features the "Museum Collection Exhibition" in Exhibition Room 3, and works by local artists Yoshikazu Igushi and Michio Takahashi are on display in Exhibition Room 4. The museum displays a high-quality collection while cherishing the local characteristics, and also holds various special exhibitions introducing contemporary artists from time to time.
The museum's front garden is lined with sculptures by artists such as Churyo Sato and Shin Hongo, and is a popular place for local residents to relax.
