Abashiri City Folk Museum
A local museum exhibiting the nature, history, and culture of Abashiri and the Okhotsk Sea
Opened in 1936 (Showa 11), this is a comprehensive local museum that exhibits and explains the rich nature of the Okhotsk region, including Abashiri, as well as its history and culture from ancient times to the present.In addition to taxidermy exhibits that allow visitors to learn about the diverse creatures living in the sea and mountains of Abashiri and the Abashiri River that connects the two, the museum also features a wealth of materials, including archaeological materials from Abashiri City, such as the Moyoro Shell Mound, which was nurtured by the Okhotsk nature, that trace the lives of people, Ainu culture materials, and modern industry materials.
The museum building was designed by Yoshiya Tagami, a leading architect in Hokkaido, and is a registered tangible cultural property of Japan. The red dome roof, tiled semicircular columns, and other architectural designs seen throughout the building are also highlights.
