"Drift Ice Monaka" and "Tentozan": A long-established confectionery shop filled with love for Abashiri.
This long-established confectionery shop in Abashiri boasts a history of over 70 years. The shop is enveloped in a warm atmosphere cultivated over many years. The display cases showcase over 40 kinds of Japanese and Western sweets, all made by hand.
Particularly popular is the "dorayaki," which is filled with homemade coarse red bean paste made from Okhotsk-grown adzuki beans. Steamed Western-style sweets such as the fluffy and creamy "half-baked cheese" and the moist and rich "baked chocolate" are also highly regarded.
There are plenty of sweets with names that are typical of Abashiri. One that catches the eye is "Ryuhyo Monaka," which features a blue mint bean paste filling. The packaging, which is decorated with a picture of drift ice, is popular with tourists and locals alike as a souvenir. Other options include "Futatsuiwa," a raisin butter busse, and "Tentozan," a smooth treat made with egg yolk bean paste and fresh cream.
Because the founder has experience making confectionery in Yamagata, they offer unique products such as "Moyoro Yubeshi," which incorporates elements of Yamagata's famous sweets. The appeal lies in the warm flavors born from time-honored techniques and careful handiwork. It is a deeply rooted presence in the community, with locals using it as a souvenir to take to other regions.

They also put a lot of effort into seasonal sweets, and their "ohagi" (rice cakes covered in sweet bean paste), sold three times a year during the equinox and Obon festival, is especially recommended. They offer about seven varieties, including smooth bean paste, chunky bean paste, sesame, and kinako (roasted soybean flour). The wide range of products, including seasonal nerikiri (sweet bean paste confections) and dango (rice dumplings), which reflect the four seasons of Japan, is one of their charms.
