Snowshoeing experience / A: Wakasagi ice fishing observation course (guided) ~Connectrip~

  • Tentozan /Yobito area

Visit the traditional ice fishing for smelt, a winter tradition at Lake Abashiri.

Connectrip, an organization that provides experiential programs utilizing local resources and promotes the charm of the region, is holding a "Smelt Ice Fishing Observation Course" with the cooperation of the local fisheries cooperative. Ice fishing is a traditional fishing method that has been practiced on Lake Abashiri in winter for generations. As the name suggests, it is a type of dragnet fishing where holes are drilled in the frozen ice and nets are set beneath the lake to catch smelt. On the lake, fishermen move around on snowmobiles, pulling up the smelt caught in the nets. You can see the real fishing process, not a tourist attraction, and the large catch of smelt leaping and splashing up close. On some days, you can even see Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed eagles soaring overhead, hunting for fish. Wearing snowshoes and listening to the guide's explanations, you will be surprised and delighted by the sight of so many smelt.
