Drift ice glass sandblasting experience Seal type rock glass ~ Ryu-hyo Glass Museum ~
Choose an illustration that represents Hokkaido and make your own eco-friendly glass
This glass workshop is run by a husband and wife team whose life's work is sustainable efforts to prevent the disappearance of drift ice in the Okhotsk Sea. Participants can experience sandblasting and painting rock glasses made from recycled glass material "Ecopirika," made from discarded fluorescent lamps, with illustrated stickers. There are approximately 60 sticker designs, including Nipopo (wooden carving dolls), snowflakes, Clione, the shape of Hokkaido, and even numbers. Nipopo is also the inspiration for Abashiri's local mascot, Nipone. By combining various designs, participants can create their own uniquely Hokkaido-inspired glass. Since no heat is used, even young children can try this workshop. The sandblasting process, which involves spraying an abrasive, is relatively simple, so even beginners can master glass crafting. Creations can be received the same day.
Points
Recommended points from the person in charge
After the experience, you can enjoy the view of the Abashiri River estuary and the majestic Sea of Okhotsk at the Scenic Cafe Hatoiwa, located at the back of the shop on the Sea of Okhotsk side. The "Drift Ice Soda," inspired by the Sea of Okhotsk, is especially popular.
