Canoeing Experience ~Dacha Forest~
Immerse yourself in the landscapes seen by ancient people while listening to explanations of The Ainu language names.
This canoe tour is navigated by a guide who is well-versed in The Ainu language and local history, and who himself says, "I love deciphering nature from Ainu The Ainu language names!" For example, the place name "Abashiri," which is of The Ainu language origin, has multiple theories and its exact meaning is still unknown, but you may be able to hear stories from the guide that include explanations of each interpretation of the place name. From the canoe, you can mainly see waterfowl such as herons, sandpipers, and gulls, and you will spend time leisurely in a nature-rich area where white-tailed eagles, which are normally seen in winter, live all year round around Abashiri. Canoeing is especially recommended during the fresh green and autumn foliage seasons at Lake Abashiri, and tours are held at Lake Chimikeppu, which is surrounded by primeval forest and is home to marimo and kokanee salmon.
