Phlox Park

A rustic and wonderful flower garden built by local Abashiri volunteers

Spread across the hills of Abashiri City Yobito, the "Gyoko no Oka Abashiri Phlox Park" is a simple and lovely handmade flower garden that was painstakingly created by local Abashiri volunteers over a period of approximately eight years. Approximately 150,000 phlox plants bloom in profusion across the vast 10-hectare site (the equivalent of two Tokyo Domes). What originally began as just 1,000 plants now paints a vibrant mosaic of red, pink, white, and purple over the entire hill, creating a "flower garden in the sky" that brightly colors the short summers of eastern Hokkaido.
The flowers begin to bloom in late July and are at their best in mid-August, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful flowers until early September. There is also an observation point within the park, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the phlox flowers as well as Lake Abashiri and the plains towards Memanbetsu.
