Lake Notoro Glasswort community
Japan's largest Glasswort community
Located in Ubaranai on the southern shore of Lake Notoro, the "Lake Notoro Glasswort Colony" boasts the largest colony of Glasswort, also known as glasswort, in Japan. Known as a natural landscape, it continues to be carefully protected by the efforts of local residents to preserve it.
The greatest attraction of this colony is the magnificent scenery that greets you in autumn. Every year, from late August to late September, Glasswort that grows in colonies of about 4 hectares turns a beautiful red like coral and reaches its peak. The sight is described as "like a bright red carpet being laid out," and is truly breathtaking. You can also enjoy the fantastic contrast with the blue of the sky.
At Lake Notoro Glasswort community, a wooden walkway has been installed so that visitors can walk right up to the middle of this bright red scenery, which offers a different atmosphere from the autumn leaves. In August 2015, after overcoming poor growth, the colony was declared restored thanks to efforts by an all-Abashiri team, such as seed collection and improvements to the lake's water inflow and outflow.
In mid-September, when the lake is at its crimsonest, Lake Notoro Coral Grass Festival is held, attracting many tourists.
