Cape Notoro
Cape Notoro protruding into the Sea of Okhotsk in Misaki, Abashiri City
It is a cape jutting out into the Sea of Okhotsk, with only a lighthouse and an office at its tip. From here you can see Lake Notoro and the coast of Tokoro Town to the west, the Sea of Okhotsk to the north, and the distant Shiretoko mountain range to the east. In winter, you can see drift ice earlier than anywhere in Abashiri, and the views are amazing. Don't forget to bring warm clothes in winter.
[Cape Notoro at night]
It's pitch black at night all year round, so on sunny days it's the best spot to take pictures of the stars. On some days you can even see a lot of shooting stars. It's a good idea to bring a light to illuminate your feet while you're moving around.
However, please be aware that there are many wild animals such as Ezo deer and red foxes that appear in the area.
[About Cape Notoro Lighthouse]
The lighthouse is 21 metres above ground and 57 metres above sea level, and its light flashes once every eight seconds, reaching a distance of approximately 36 km.
This lighthouse was first lit in 1917 (Taisho 6).
It is the oldest reinforced concrete lighthouse in Hokkaido and has been shining for over a century.
